  • dMarie Time Capsule
    Input a date from the 20th century, and this interactive "time capsule" displays headlines, lists popular songs and provides other information about life in the United States at that point in time.

  • Earth Calendar
    This site lists holidays and celebrations around the world. You can view holidays by country, specific date or religion.

  • Interfaith Calendar
    This calendar lists the dates of sacred times for world religions. It includes information for the current month through the year 2014 as well as archived data back to January 2001. Click on the "definitions" link to see a brief explanation of the religious observance.

  • Perpetual Calendar
    This calculator creates a full year's calendar for any year, past or present, and indicates U.S. holidays and moon phases.

  • This Day in History
    Find out what happened on a particular date. Lots of birthdays, holidays and events for every day of the year.

  • The Britannica Concise Encyclopedia
    An online version of the one-volume encyclopedia that contains 25,000 articles.

  • The Canadian Encyclopedia
    The online version, in both English and French, of the Canadian Encyclopedia, which contains about 40,000 articles related to every aspect of Canada. The site is enhanced with articles from Maclean’s, a Canadian weekly newsmagazine.

  • The Columbia Encyclopedia
    The online version of the Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition includes more than 51,000 articles. Some articles also include suggestions for further reading.

  • Encarta Encyclopedia
    The free version of Encarta offers more than 4500 articles including photos, maps and audio files. However, articles marked with an asterisk (*) are available only for paying subscribers to the Encarta Premium service, which contains more than 60,000 articles, photographs, maps and audio files.

  • Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance
    A database of all federal grant, loan and other assistance programs available to public and private organizations and individuals. The database is updated twice per year.

  • Council on Foundations
    The Council provides grant-making help to foundations. While it does not provide services to grantseekers, it does offer a list of resources to consult.

  • Foundation Center
    The Center publishes directories listing foundations that offer grants to individuals or nonprofit organizations. The Web site offers resources for beginning grantseekers that includes a list of FAQs.

  • Grants.gov
    All federal agencies are now required to post grant opportunities online. Grants.gov offers the ability to find federal government grant opportunities and apply for them.

  • SRA International Grants Web
    The Society of Research Administrators International offers links to finding funds from government and private sources.

    The U.S. Department of State's descriptions of the world's countries and regions. Information on each country's geography, people, history, economy, government, political conditions, foreign relations, and defense is included.

    Information on countries around the world. This site, too, is a CIA product.

  • Country Profiles
    Each profile summarizes a country's history, geography, society, economy, transportation and telecommunications, government and politics, and national security. Produced by the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress.

  • EmbassyWorld
    Locate the addresses and Web sites of embassies and consulates worldwide.

  • Europa: the European Union On-Line

  • NationMaster
    Using data compiled from various government sources, you can generate graphs comparing countries and view statistics on a variety of subjects. Find out which countries have the happiest people, most tourist arrivals or highest confidence in their legal systems.

    Contains selective links providing authoritative, in-depth information about areas around the world. Arrangement is by country or area, and the links for each are sorted into a wide range of broad categories.

  • Washington Post's World Section
    This site offers a "Search the World" database, which serves as a gateway to information about a particular country or region. You'll find current news, general information, weather forecasts, and links to sites where you can find out more about a country.

  • Maps

    • About.com's World Atlas and World Maps
      Arranged alphabetically by country, this site offers links to various maps including political and blank outline maps.

    • How Far Is It?
      Type in the name of two cities in the United States or around the world, and find out the distance between them.

    • Mapquest
      Locate businesses and addresses, and obtain driving directions.

    • Michelin Maps
      This site offers detailed European road maps and driving directions. Genealogists will enjoy locating their ancestral homes.

    • National Atlas
      This site from the U.S. Department of the Interior allows you to make your own interactive maps of national geospatial and geostatistical data sets. There is also an option to print simple reference maps.

    • National Geographic Map Machine
      Maps are available for 191 countries and each of the states and provinces of the United States and Canada. Also available are their black and white "Xpeditions Atlas" maps, which are specially designed to be printer-friendly.

    • Perry-Castaneda Library Map Collection
      This University of Texas Web site makes accessible thousands of modern and historical maps from their collections. Genealogists will appreciate the many city maps of 1920s vintage (search the links located under Historical and US).

    • Rand McNally
      This site provides free maps and driving directions. If you register for a free basic membership, you can save addresses, maps, directions and personalized trip plans.

    • Terraserver
      You can find aerial and/or satellite photos for most U.S. locations at this Microsoft site. The level of detail is extraordinary: you can see your own backyard (or anyone else's!) from a new perspective.

    • TopoZone
      Topozone includes every current United States Geological Survey topographic map, the most detailed maps of their kind. The index of nearly two million place names is linked to the maps, and provides an easy way to locate even the smallest community or geographic feature.

Telephone, E-mail and Address Directories

  • Codes:  Area, City, Country, and Zip Codes

    • All Nations Expatriates & Travelers Telephone Search Engine
      Provides an easy way to determine what calling codes are needed to dial any country in the world from any other country.

    • AmeriCom Area Decoder
      Identifies the city associated with a particular area code. Or enter a city name to display its area, city or country code. Also displays the local time, and for U.S. cities, the county in which the city is located.

    • International Dialing Codes
      Use this table to find how to call from one country to another. Includes alphabetical lists of cities, organized by country, which provide city code or area code.

    • Zip+4 Code Look-up
      Input an address, and the proper zip code is returned. Provided by the United States Postal Service.

  • E-mail Addresses
    A complete directory of all e-mail addresses does not exist. Most Internet Service Providers do not automatically register their customers' e-mail addresses; therefore, e-mail directories will generally only include people who have registered their own e-mail addresses.

    • Address.com Email Finder
      The largest e-mail address directory on the Web. It also includes a reverse e-mail search.

    • College E-mail Addresses
      Search for e-mail addresses of students, faculty and staff at colleges and universities.

    • MESA: Meta E-mail Search Agent
      Enter a person's name and MESA will search available sources of e-mail addresses including WhoWhere, Yahoo, Usenet addresses, IAF, Switchboard and Bigfoot.

  • Telephone/Address Directories
    The following directories contain U.S. and/or international telephone numbers. Although there are many Internet phone directories, the actual data comprising their U.S. white and yellow pages comes primarily from just two companies (Acxiom and infoUSA).

    • AnyWho: Internet Directory Assistance
      Find phone numbers and addresses for people and businesses. Also includes a toll-free directory, reverse lookup by telephone number, maps and directions, and international phone directories. U.S. residential information is provided by local telephone company records for published telephone listings.

    • Infobel World Telephone Directories
      Search telephone directories for more than 184 countries. Also includes International Dialing Codes.

    • InfoSpace
      Includes yellow and white pages, maps and directions, a reverse lookup for telephone numbers and street addresses, and international directories.

    • SuperPages.com
      Search for U.S. businesses by name or yellow page category. Use their people pages to search for people nationwide or by state. Maps, driving directions and a reverse lookup for telephone numbers are included.
