  • dMarie Time Capsule
    Input a date from the 20th century, and this interactive "time capsule" displays headlines, lists popular songs and provides other information about life in the United States at that point in time.

  • Earth Calendar
    This site lists holidays and celebrations around the world. You can view holidays by country, specific date or religion.

  • Interfaith Calendar
    This calendar lists the dates of sacred times for world religions. It includes information for the current month through the year 2014 as well as archived data back to January 2001. Click on the "definitions" link to see a brief explanation of the religious observance.

  • Perpetual Calendar
    This calculator creates a full year's calendar for any year, past or present, and indicates U.S. holidays.

  • Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance
    A database of all federal grant, loan and other assistance programs available to public and private organizations and individuals. The database is updated twice per year.

  • Foundation Center
    The Center publishes directories listing foundations that offer grants to individuals or nonprofit organizations. The Web site offers resources for beginning grantseekers that includes a list of FAQs.

  • Grants.gov
    All federal agencies are now required to post grant opportunities online. Grants.gov offers the ability to find federal government grant opportunities and apply for them.

  • SRA International Grants Web
    The Society of Research Administrators International offers links to finding funds from government and private sources.

        The Federal Emergency Management Agency's detailed guide to what the public can do to prepare for natural disasters, technological hazards and terrorist incidents. Detailed instructions are outlined on what to do before, during and after such events, and general information on recovering from disasters is also included. Also available in Spanish.

      • Emergency Preparedness & Response
        The Centers for Disease Control and Preparedness provides information on how to prepare for and respond to bioterrorism agents, chemical emergencies, mass trauma, natural disasters, severe weather events and radiation emergencies. Also available in Spanish.

      • Ready.gov
        The U.S. Department of Homeland Security outlines what the public and businesses can do to prepare for and react to the possibility of various natural and man-made threats. Also available in Spanish. NOTE: A critique of the information on this site, with corrections and recommendations, has been developed by the Federation of American Scientists. Their analysis is available online at ReallyReady.org and is directed toward emergency preparedness measures for families, businesses and people with disabilities.

        Provides links to official federal government information from all three branches of government, including such items as Government Accountability Office Reports and U.S. Supreme Court decisions from 1937 through 1975.

        Provides easy-to-use access to online federal government information. Also provides links to information on state and local governments. A version of this site is also available in Spanish.

    • Abbreviations and Acronyms of the U.S. Government

    • Budget of the United States Government
      The U.S. budget is issued by the Office of Management and Budget and is presented here, for fiscal years 1997 to date, along with related documents such as the Economic Report of the President.

    • Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance
      A searchable database of programs that provide financial or nonfinancial aid.

    • Envirofacts Data Warehouse
      The Envirofacts Data Warehouse is a product of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. You may search EPA databases for environmental information on Fairfax County (or other locations): Superfund sites, drinking water, toxic and air releases, hazardous waste, water discharge permits or grants information.

    • Forms.gov
      This site provides one-stop-shopping for the most frequently used federal forms. Search for forms by number, by agency or alphabetically by form name.

      Track the money and progress of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Learn more about this economic stimulus plan and its timeline and impact on jobs. Includes information on how to provide feedback and more.

    • State and Local Sourcebook
      Governing magazine provides comprehensive links to the home pages of states, legislatures, major cities and counties, government- related national associations and research organizations. The Governing.com Web site offers selected feature articles from monthly issues of the magazine, links to topical news events as covered by major U.S. newspapers and periodic studies with ratings of public officials and government performance.

    Locate the addresses and Web sites of embassies and consulates worldwide.

  • Europa — Gateway to the European Union
    Contains the official EU directory, searchable by person or entity; news; information on EU laws and regulations; Web links to all EU institutions; a job search engine and more.

  • NationMaster
    Using data compiled from various government sources, you can generate graphs comparing countries and view statistics on a variety of subjects. Find out which countries have the happiest people, most tourist arrivals or highest confidence in their legal systems.

  • National Anthems
    Lyrics and music of national anthems from all over the world.

  • Portals to the World

  • Washington Post's World Section
    This site offers a "Search the World" database, which serves as a gateway to information about a particular country or region. You'll find current news, general information, weather forecasts, and links to sites where you can find out more about a country.

    • About.com's World Atlas and World Maps
      Arranged alphabetically by country, this site offers links to various maps including political and blank outline maps.

    • How Far Is It?
      Type in the name of two cities in the United States or around the world, and find out the distance between them.

    • Mapquest
      Locate businesses and addresses, and obtain driving directions.

    • Michelin Maps
      This site offers detailed European road maps and driving directions. Genealogists will enjoy locating their ancestral homes.

    • National Atlas
      This site from the U.S. Department of the Interior allows you to make your own interactive maps of national geospatial and geostatistical data sets. There is also an option to print simple reference maps.

    • National Geographic Map Machine
      Maps are available for 191 countries and each of the states and provinces of the United States and Canada. Also available are their black and white "Xpeditions Atlas" maps, which are specially designed to be printer-friendly.

    • Perry-Castaneda Library Map Collection
      This University of Texas Web site makes accessible thousands of modern and historical maps from their collections. Genealogists will appreciate the many city maps of 1920s vintage (search the links located under Historical and United States).

    • Rand McNally
      This site provides free maps and driving directions. If you register for a free basic membership, you can save addresses, maps, directions and personalized trip plans.

    • U.S. Geological Survey Map Locator
      Downloadable topographic maps.

  • All Nations International Telephone Calling Code Search Engine
    Provides an easy way to determine what calling codes are needed to dial any country in the world from any other country.

  • AmeriCom Area Decoder
    Identifies the city associated with a particular area code. Or enter a city name to display its area, city or country code. Also displays the local time, and for U.S. cities, the county in which the city is located.

  • International Dialing Codes
    Use this table to find how to call from one country to another. Includes alphabetical lists of cities, organized by country, which provide city code or area code.

  • People Finders
    The following directories contain U.S. and/or international telephone numbers. Although there are many Internet phone directories, the actual data comprising their U.S. white and yellow pages comes primarily from just two companies (Acxiom and infoUSA).

    • AnyWho
      Find phone numbers and addresses for people and businesses. Also includes a reverse lookup by telephone number, maps and directions, and international phone directories. U.S. residential information is provided by local telephone company records for published telephone listings.

    • Infobel World Telephone Directories
      Search telephone directories for more than 184 countries. Also includes International Dialing Codes.

    • SuperPages.com
      Search for U.S. businesses by name or yellow page category. Use their people pages to search for people nationwide by name, or by name and location or zip code. Reverse lookups for telephone numbers and addresses are included.

  • Zip+4 Code Look-up
    Input an address, and the proper zip code is returned. Provided by the United States Postal Service.
