To celebrate a generous gift from the Friends of the Reston Regional Library to enhance the library’s eBook collection, the Reston Regional Library and the Friends of the Reston Regional Library are sponsoring Discover eBooks Day.
The event on Oct. 8 will kick off at 11 a.m. with the official check presentation from Friends President Brian Jacoby to Supervisor Catherine M. Hudgins and the library director. Then, participants will receive hands-on demonstrations on downloading eBooks from the library’s eBook provider, OverDrive, and will also have the opportunity to compare eBooks on the multiple devices including the Nook, the Sony eReader and iPad that are compatible with Overdrive’s software.
“Our collection staff has already been busy spending the first installment of the $100,000 gift,” said Edwin S. Clay III, director of the Fairfax County Public Library. “Since the rise in demand for eBooks, our waiting lists for many titles have been very long and at times there are no popular fiction eBooks available. But thanks to this gift as well as other recent donations from the Fairfax Library Foundation and a special supplement from the Board of Supervisors, we will be able to meet much more of the demand,” said Clay.
This gift will be used by the library to purchase more copies of popular books to reduce the waiting time while also purchasing additional titles in the eBook format. The cost of eBooks varies, but it is estimated the library will add 3,000 new or currently owned titles. You can see the entire Reston Friends collection of eBooks on the library’s OverDrive page.
“We are grateful to the Friends of the Reston Regional Library for this generous donation and all of the Fairfax County residents who support the library by donating their used books, CDs and DVDs to the library and those who buy books at the used book sales run by our many friends groups,” said Clay.
The Reston Regional Library is located at 11925 Bowman Towne Drive in Reston. For more information about the event call 703-689-2700.
