“Five years has flown in the blink of an eye,” says Jerilyn Polson, Oakton’s branch manager. “The community has embraced us so completely that I can’t imagine Oakton without a library. I hope everyone will come out and enjoy our celebration and continue to show their support for public libraries as essential to their quality of life.”
The 17,304-square-foot library branch opened with a collection of 70,000 items on September 29, 2007. It is the first (and only) Fairfax County Public Library branch located in the Providence District and also the first county library designed using the Leadership in Energy and Environment (LEED) principals developed by the U.S. Green Building Council. It received the organization’s silver certification.
On opening day in 2007, more than 2,000 individuals checked out over 3,000 items. Today, the branch serves more than 14,000 customers each month who check out more than 31,000 items.
