Sherwood Regional Library opened on Sept. 20, 1971, as the Fairfax County Public Library’s first regional library, serving as a model for the current regional and community library branch system. On opening day, the branch circulated 1,800 volumes. The second floor housed the children’s room and books for new branches scheduled to be opened.
Today, the branch circulates more than 50,000 items per month and 26,000 individuals pass through its doors during the same period. The library offers 27 Internet stations with Microsoft Office and wireless access. The second floor now houses a Tech Lab. There is a meeting room, four conference rooms and a group study room. Special spaces include the Read to Me room in the children's area on the first floor where parents of young children enjoy puzzles and board books.
