Friends of the Fairfax City Library Donate $50,000
City of Fairfax Regional Library received a donation of $50,000 from its Friends group recently. The Fairfax branch’s Friends group, in existence for over 50 years, raises money for the library by selling used books throughout the year.
“On behalf of the library and our customers, I want to offer our deep appreciation to the Friends of the Fairfax City Library,” said Edwin S. Clay III, director of the Fairfax County Public Library. “The demand for eBooks is still stronger than the library can meet right now. This generous gift will help shorten the long waiting lists for the most popular titles,” said Clay.
More than 306,000 eBooks have been downloaded since July, a 74-percent increase over FY2011. Though eBooks represents just 2.9 percent of the library’s total circulation, their popularity is steadily on the rise.
“It is our great pleasure to donate these funds to the library for the purchase of eBooks. With the popularity of eReaders, we felt this would be the best way to serve the needs of our library, its patrons and our community,” said Marilyn Feldman, president of the Friends of the Fairfax City Library.
The library will use the $50,000 to purchase more copies of popular eBooks, reducing waits for digital material, while also purchasing additional titles in the eBook format. The cost of eBooks varies, but it is estimated the library will be able to add 1,500 new or currently owned titles.
“We are grateful to the Friends of the Fairfax City Library for this generous donation and all of the Fairfax County residents who support the library by donating their used books, CDs and DVDs to the library and those who buy books at the used book sales run by our many friends groups,” said Clay.
