City of Fairfax Celebrates Golden Anniversary
A week of festivities from July 7 to July 14 marks the 50th anniversary of the City of Fairfax Regional Library, now located at 10360 North St., Fairfax.
The celebration will include Wonderbunny’s Traveling Show of Mystery at 2 p.m. (registration required; sign up online at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/library or call 703-293-6227); the Potomac Brass Quintet at 7 p.m. on July 9; balloon sculpting on July 14, a taste of cake several times during the week, giveaways and more.
“We are excited to celebrate our fifty-year presence in the City of Fairfax, “says Kathy Hoffman,” the branch’s manager. “We have been able to evolve with the city. Our new building provides a strong architectural entrance into the updated Old Town area and it offers area residents a welcoming place to enjoy all the amenities a modern public library has to offer”
The festivities are sponsored by the Fairfax Library Foundation and the Friends of the Fairfax City Library.
Then known as Headquarters Library and located next to the post office, the branch was dedicated July 8, 1962. Less than two years after it opened, its circulation had jumped 78 percent. The branch served the local community at that location for 44 years until 2008 when, through a joint venture between the City of Fairfax and the Fairfax County Public Library, it moved to its present building and location. Today it boasts a circulation of more than half a million items per year and more people pass through its doors than at any other branch in the library’s system.
