What’s New in Children’s Picture Books December, 2012


Reading Tip:  When you read aloud a book, talk to children about what they are hearing. This teaches them unfamiliar words or concepts and helps them understand the story. This leads to good reading comprehension.

Blue Sky. Blue Sky by Audrey Wood
Throughout the day and into the night, a boy and his family observe the constantly changing sky. Appropriate for ages 2-5
Themes: Sky, Weather

The Cazuela that the Farm Maiden Stirred by Samantha R. Vamos
A cumulative tale of a farm maiden who prepares "arroz con leche," or rice pudding. Appropriate for ages 4-5
Themes: Cookery

Dini Dinosaur by Karen Beaumont
After a day of playing, a young dinosaur needs help from Mama at bath time before being tucked into bed. Appropriate for ages 3-5

Give the Dog a Bone by Steven Kellogg
A variation on the familiar song, "This Old Man," in which an increasing number of dogs look for treats. Appropriate for ages 4-5

Poems describing the many creatures living in the sea, from the sea horse to the blue whale.
Appropriate for ages 4-5

My Name is Elizabeth! by Annika Dunklee
Elizabeth really likes her name, but she does NOT like it when people call her by nicknames. Appropriate for ages 4-5

No Two Alike by Keith Baker
A pair of birds goes on a snowflake-filled journey through a winter landscape where everything everywhere, from branches and leaves to forests full of trees, is unique. Appropriate for ages birth-5

Two Little Monkeys by Mem Fox
A rhyming tale about two little monkeys who are hiding from a leopard. Appropriate for ages 2-5

Utterly Otterly Night. Utterly Otterly Night by Mary Casanova
While out playing with his family one night, Little Otter shows that he knows what to do when danger is near. Appropriate for ages 4-5

Who's There? by Carole Lexa Schaefer
A child, already tucked in for the night, is frightened by strange noises that grow ever closer. Appropriate for ages 3-5

Wolf Won't Bite! by Emily Gravett
Three little circus pigs capture a wild wolf and make him do outrageous tricks, safe in the belief that he would never bite them. Appropriate for ages 3-5
