How to renew library materials

You can borrow most items for three weeks.

Items may be renewed up to 2 times (total of 9 weeks of use for the first check out and 2 renewals). If someone else has placed a hold on the item, it may not be renewed. Renewals are given 3 additional weeks from the date of renewal or 1 additional week for DVDs; the renewal period is not added to the original due date.

  1. Log in to the catalog by typing your Library card number and password.
  2. Click on "My Account" in the top green banner.
  3. Click on "Review My Account."
  4. Select items you wish to renew by checking the box next to the title.
  5. Click the Renew Selected Items button.

How to return library materials

With the exception of art prints, library materials may be returned to any branch or deposited in the book drop at any library branch.

How to place a hold on library materials

We recommend you login to the catalog before beginning the holds process. If you have not logged in, you will be asked to login for each item you wish to place on hold.

Conduct your search.

One of two scenarios will occur depending on how many items are returned by your search.

1) If the search provided just one result, click on the words "Place Hold" on the left of the screen. A screen will appear asking you to select a pick-up location from the drop down menu. Select the name of the library branch where you would like to pick up the item. Click on the "Place Hold" button.

2) If your search results in more than one match, select a title by clicking on "Details" on the left side of the screen. Click on the words "Place Hold" on the left of the screen. A screen will appear asking you to select a pick-up location from the drop down menu. Select the name of the library branch where you would like to pick up the item. Click on the "Place Hold" button.

Fees

Fairfax County Public Library cards are available at no charge to all individuals who live, work, or attend school in Fairfax County or Fairfax City. The fee to replace a card is $2.00. Individuals not eligible for a free card may apply for an annual fee of $27.00 a year.

Fees help bring materials back for others to use. Fees for material kept past its due date accrue daily. You can receive notification via e-mail that materials you have checked out are approaching their return date.

The replacement cost is refunded on such items if returned in usable condition within six months. The library uses a collection agency to assist in recovering books. There's a $10 charge if the library refers an account to the collection agency.

Confidentiality of customer records

Fairfax County Public Library customer records are strictly confidential and protected from disclosure by the Virginia Freedom of Information Act.

Virginia Code Section 2.2-3705 (10)

"Exclusions to application of chapter ... (public records open to inspection) ...library records that can be used to identify both (i) any library patron who has borrowed material from a library and (ii) the material such patron borrowed."

Library account records of children

The Library's Board of Trustees has approved a policy that current library records of children 12 and under should be available to their parents or guardians. Parents of children age 12 and under may ask for and obtain the titles of materials that their children currently have checked out.

Records of cardholders, age 13-18, are confidential, as are adult records.
