On April 12th, 2006 the Fairfax County Public Library (FCPL) Board of Trustees recognized Star Volunteers and Community Service Partners at a ceremony at the George Mason Regional Library. Forty-five volunteers and four corporate volunteer partners were honored. Awardees were selected from over 3,200 individuals who contributed over 152,000 hours of service to the Library during the previous year. Awards were given for 1,000, 3,000, and 5,000 hours of service and for exceptional projects and performance.

Presenting awards were the Hon. Mark Sickles, Virginia House of Delegates, 43rd District, and Stephanie Abbott, Chair, FCPL Board of Trustees.

Community Service Partner Awards

Datatel, Inc.
DeAnn Jelinek with Mark Sickles.DeAnn Jelinek, Datatel Volunteer

Datatel is known for leadership in community service. Since 2002, the Library has been a site for the company's Community Day. Last May, teams of Datatel employees volunteered at book sales held by the Friends of Reston and Kings Park Libraries. They moved boxes, restocked shelves, acted as runners and assisted cashiers. The sales yielded record-breaking receipts that were used for programs and equipment for the two branches. The volunteers also organized part of the collection at Kings Park.

Datatel matched their service last year with a generous gift of $1,500 to the FCPL Foundation, which was used to purchase books for the Library's Motheread®/Fatheread® literacy outreach program. On April 29th and May 6th, the Library will again welcome Datatel volunteers for their 2006 Community Day. The Library is proud to honor Datatel as a Community Service Partner. Accepting the award is DeAnn Jelinek, a Datatel volunteer who has contributed outstanding service on numerous library projects since the beginning of this volunteer partnership.

Exxon Mobil Corporation
Judy Hubka with Mark Sickles.Judy Hubka, Exxon Mobil Community Relations

ExxonMobil has given major support to the Library over the past six years. This year they supported the Fall for the Book festival and the Children's Foreign Language Collection. They also provided grants of $6,500 for employees, retirees, and their families who regularly volunteer at the Library and matching gifts of $885 for employees' donations. The ExxonMobil Employees' Book Club also held a book drive last spring and donated Summer Reading Program books worth over $4,360 to children participating in Sherwood's West Side Stories outreach program. This spring, they are again collecting books for Motheread®/Fatheread® families participating in the Summer Reading Program. ExxonMobil has also funded a Community Summer Jobs Program internship for a college student to assist with the Motheread®/Fatheread® program this summer. Accepting the Award is Judy Hubka, whose leadership in organizing ExxonMobil volunteer efforts for the Library has been much appreciated.

INOVA Health Systems
For over seven years, INOVA Health Systems has brought together the worlds of information, health, and literature to the diverse community we both serve. Although there have been many individual projects along the way, three programs have formed the centerpiece in our efforts to build a vibrant and healthy community: information "triage" (the sharing of the Fairfax Hospital Health Sciences Library), the Ask the Expert series at library branches, and the Literature and Medicine discussion groups. In recognition of INOVA's outstanding contributions to this successful partnership, the Library presents a Community Service Partner Award to INOVA Health Systems.

Fairfax County Office of Partnerships

The Office of Partnerships developed a successful collaboration in 2006 between the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program and the Fairfax County Public Library. Named CASH (Creating Assets Savings and Hope), this program provides tax preparation assistance using IRS trained volunteers for families with annual incomes under $38,000. As of March 20th, the total refunds broke the half million dollar mark for total refunds of $528,659. The average Earned Income Tax Credit refunds were about $1700, well above the national average of $1200. This is the equivalent of a raise of about $1.08 per hour for a 30 hour per week employee. In the next phase of the program, FCPL and OOP are already planning a financial literacy series targeting the same group of clients. For these outstanding efforts, the Library recognizes the Office of Partnerships with a Community Service Partner Award.
