Position Title: Ready to Read Volunteer
Branch: Available at most branches
Department: Children's Department
Supervisor: Children's Staff
Length of Commitment: A year. Must attend and successfully complete a Ready to Read training (provided at a central location in Fairfax County).
Time Involvement: 3 – 4 hours a month
Position Summary:
Using the concepts of the Public
Library Association’s Every Child Ready to Read program, a Ready to
Read volunteer will visit preschools and child care centers in a branch
library’s service area to present story times and share information about
the library. During their story times, Ready to Read volunteers will
model the six pre-reading skills for teachers and caregivers. Preschool
and child care center visits may be made with a volunteer partner or
alone.
Major Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the children’s staff, prepares story time
presentations using books, fingerplays, and songs; schedules monthly
story times visits with preschools and child care centers; drives to
preschools and child care centers; meets school staff; presents story
time(s), modeling six pre-reading skills; talks about neighborhood
library branch and distributes library materials to children and staff.
Qualifications:
Experience working with groups of young children, preferably through
teaching or children's programming, is required; good English skills;
self-motivated; has a valid driver's license and is able to drive to
preschools and child care centers; available during weekday daytime
hours.
