Title: Spanish Conversation Group Leader
Branch: Several Branches
Supervisor: Information Staff
Length of Commitment: at least 3 months
Time Involvement: Weekly sessions last 60-90 minutes,
depending on the topic. Preparation time can be minimal,
once the initial planning has been done.
Position Summary: Provide language practice and coaching
to students who had Spanish lessons earlier and have become
“rusty.” Conversation skills are stressed
with focus on student needs.
Major Responsibilities: Keep the group focused
on speaking Spanish! Encourage the use of dictionaries
and informal ways to communicate in Spanish. Become familiar
with library resources that can help in this effort, e.g.
subscriptions to Hola, Spanish language instructional
media, local Spanish language broadcast media, internet
translation services. Plan discussion topics to start
the session.
Qualifications:Minimum age of 18. Available at
least twice a month. Ability to speak Spanish with little
or no accent. Ability to facilitate a discussion. Knowledge
of relevant customs that will help students understand
their neighbors. Team approach with the Library’s
Information staff to identify local resources that will
be helpful. Familiarity with teaching techniques, such
as the use of white boards, vocabulary building, is a
plus, but not a requirement. Willingness to learn as well
as teach. Must enjoy meeting and talking with people,
have good interpersonal skills, and be able to adapt to
changing needs.
