Try reference public service, children's programming,
or a project supporting these departments. Orientation
and training are provided for all practicums in the branch
or department where the practicum takes place. Students
may attend, if appropriate and possible, the Fairfax County
Public Library staff training modules.
Plan/present programs/tutorials on the latest Internet
features, including the Library's catalog and databases,
at a branch convenient to you. The Technology Labs at
Woodrow Wilson Library
(Baileys Crossroads) and Sherwood
Regional Library (Alexandria) also offer an opportunity
to assist immigrants and low-income families with a broad
spectrum of computer-based library resources, including
Microsoft Office. All branches have CCTV and Zoomtext,
and interns can learn these technologies and introduce
the Internet and online Library services to visually impaired
patrons via adapted workstations.
Plan and organize an English Conversation group where
people from various ethnic backrooms can meet over lunch
or snacks to practice English, share information and experiences,
and learn about Library resources and services. Prepare
handouts of English tips and samples of foreign language
and ESL materials that the Library owns. Facilitate weekly
discussion. Evaluate the progress/impact of the project
at the end of the semester.
Work with Associate Director Vera Fessler and a team of
staff, volunteers, and community partners to research
and write a proposal for a multicultural or multigenerational
Library program for the public.
