Diane Redmond
Since 1995, Diane Redmond has been a regular
volunteer with the Information Department at the Centreville Regional
Library. She inquired about volunteering after seeing a sign posted
at the branch, and after her first shift she knew she had found the right
volunteer opportunity for her.
Her favorite part about volunteering for the library is that there is always a wide variety of things to do. She arrives every Tuesday morning, picks up a clipboard with a list of tasks, and gets right to work. On any given day she may be weeding books, locating materials customers have put on hold, or assisting with special projects in the Children’s section.
Diane likes the changes she has seen at the library over the past decade and a half. Operations have become more streamlined. The physical appearance has changed for the better as well. “The reference section used to be huge, but now with so much information online, we were able to make the area smaller, creating space for other materials as well as computers and workspaces. The branch has a much more open and welcoming feel to it.”
Diane says that volunteering fits well into her life. She feels that she comes from a generation of people that are task-oriented and like to keep busy. “There is no true retirement for people in my circle,” she says. “You can always find something to do and ways to give back.”
