How To Qualify For Managed Deer Hunts

 How To Qualify

1. Managed hunt participants will be selected via hunt lottery. The number of hunters selected is based on the number of tree stand positions determined at each managed hunt location.

2. Hunters who have previously qualified for Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuge Hunts OR Fairfax County Managed Hunts may submit qualification cards from 2009 & 2010 as proof of qualification to participate in the FY12 managed hunts. Qualifications are valid for three (3) years.

Each hunter will be allowed 3 attempts per weapon. The weapon and ammo used to qualify must be included in the application packet. Only weapons and ammunition qualified with and listed on the certification card may be used or possessed during the hunt. No permit will be issued to any person not certifying on an approved range. All participants must qualify.

Again, this year you have the option of qualifying with three types of firearms. Selected participants will be permitted to use shotguns with buckshot; shotgun with slugs; OR muzzleloaders:

New managed hunt qualifications have been developed with the expertise of the FCPD Range personnel.

Qualification Dates/Times:

  • Saturday October 15, 2011 from 8 am to 1 pm
  • Sunday October 16, 2011 from 8 am to 1 pm

Nominal changes have been made to the structure and process of qualifying to participate in the public managed hunts:

  • Qualifications for use of shotgun with slugs and muzzleloaders will be conducted at the FCPD Range on dates and times listed above.
  • Hunters can arrive between the hours of 0800 and 1230 or 1300 and 1730 on the selected dates above. Last call will be at 1230 or 1730. Anyone arriving after 1230/1730 will not be allowed to shoot.
  • Ammo and weapons should be stored separately until given directions by the Firearms Instructors.
  • Qualification will be on full size deer targets, and from an elevated deer stand.
  • FCPD Range staff will provide criteria for qualifying when you arrive at the range.
  • FCPD Range has determined that no fee will be charged for weapons qualification.
  • FCPD Range is not a “sight-in” facility and no practice shooting will be permitted at the range prior to a qualification attempt.
  • Hunters must provide their own ammunition and qualify with the firearm to be used during the managed hunt(s).
  • Ladder stand equipment will be provided for elevated position use at the FCPD Range.

Hunters must provide own safety strap and may use brace/support to qualify, if necessary.

NOTE: Bring ear and eye protection – Most ranges require protection to get on the firing line.

All firearms must be unloaded with action open while at a range except when specifically instructed by range instructor to load and fire weapon. Failure to comply with regulations, unsafe activity, or instructions by range instructor will result in immediate removal from the site, not completing requirements for the hunt, and no permit or firearms qualifications.

The range instructor’s decision regarding safety or qualification at the range is final – NO appeals!
