SCYPT Meeting Summary - September 2013

SCYPT Members in Attendance:

Schedule Changes Adopted:
The members adopted two meeting additions to the SY 2013-14 SCYPT meeting schedule
. The additional meetings, all of which are on Wednesdays from 9:30 to 12 noon, will be on November 6, 2013; and March 12, 2014. The additional meetings will allow time for the team to work on structure and decision-making processes. The STRIVE Network will be providing consulting and technical assistance services to assist the SCYPT.

Suicide Prevention Recommendations Adopted:
Jesse Ellis presented findings and recommendations from a staff review of suicides in Fairfax County. The SCYPT adopted the recommendations, amending recommendation #3 so that it reads “Commit to prioritize primary prevention activities that provide the best opportunities to prevent suicide and the risk factors that accompany it.” 

Youth Behavioral Health Services Recommendations Adopted:
Brenda Gardiner presented findings and recommendations from a staff review of behavioral health services for youth in Fairfax County. The SCYPT adopted the recommendations, with a clarification that the proposed $1 million would be used for direct services.

School Readiness Presentation Tabled:
As time was running short, the SCYPT tabled the presentation of school readiness programs and endorsement of a scope of recommendations. Anne-Marie Twohie distributed the presentation handouts and gave a brief overview of the importance of services from infancy through pre-school to school readiness. Prior to the next meeting, fuller recommendations and background material will be distributed to the team. George Becerra distributed the Minority Student Achievement Oversight Committee’s recommendations related to school readiness and closing the achievement gap.

Information Items Presented:
The SCYPT received information on the release of the 2012-2013 school year Youth Survey data.
