Census blocks are statistical areas bounded on all sides by visible (ex: roads, streams) and/or nonvisible (political boundaries) features. Blocks are the smallest geographic areas for which the Census Bureau publishes data from the decennial census. For census data, visit
Block Groups (BG) are clusters of blocks within the same census tract that have the same first digit of their 4-digit census block number from the same decennial census. A BG usually covers a contiguous area. Each census tract contains at least one BG, and BGs are uniquely numbered within each census tract. For census data, visit
FEDERAL_TRACT_2010 Polygon
Census tracts are small, relatively permanent statistical subdivisions of a county or equivalent entity. Census tracts generally have a population size between 1,200 and 8,000 people, with an optimum size of 4,000 people. Census tract boundaries generally follow visible and identifiable features. For census data, visit SUPERVISOR_DISTRICTS Polygon Supervisor districts (aka magisterial districts). Fairfax county is divided into nine districts, each holding a seat on the county board of supervisors.

COUNTY_BORDER Polygon Geographic boundary, portraying extent and limits of land recognized as Fairfax County, Commonwealth of Virginia. Defined in part by both physical features (Potomac and Occoquan Rivers), and monumented legal boundaries for surrounding jurisdictions (State of Maryland, Arlington, Loudoun, and Prince William Counties, cities of Alexandria and Falls Church).
HUMAN_SVCS_REGIONS Polygon The four human services regions were created based mainly on our county's geographic areas, in addition to the following criteria: current human services caseload distribution; total population distribution; postal zip codes; areas served by community-based organizations; natural boundaries and communities; school enrollment areas; magisterial districts; minority populations; population income.

POLITICAL_JURISDICTIONS Polygon Geographic boundaries for Fairfax County and surrounding jurisdictions (Montgomery, Prince Georges, Arlington, Loudoun, and Prince William Counties, cities of Alexandria and Falls Church, Washington D.C.).

VOLUNTEER_GROUP_AREAS Polygon The Volunteer Groups (also known as Community Based Organizations) are non-profit organizations that provide basic needs assistance to specific areas of the county. This layer defines their service areas.
ZIPCODE_AREAS Polygon ZIP code areas within the county. PARKS_FCPA Polygon All land parcels under ownership of Fairfax County Park Authority.
PARKS_FCPA_MAINTENANCE_AREAS Polygon The county is divided into 6 grounds management areas to determine responsibility for Park Authority grounds maintenance.

PARKS_NON_FCPA Polygon Non-county owned parkland. Attributes include jurisdiction and name of property.
PARKS_NON_FCPA_TRAILS Line Trails within Fairfax County maintained by non-FCPA entities. Contributors include: the National Park Service, Town of Herndon, Reston Association, City of Fairfax, Burke Center Conservancy, the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority, and others. REFUSE_COLLECTION_AREAS Polygon Collection areas for refuse and recycling pickup. These areas are broken down by special tax districts from the Department of Tax Administration system.
REFUSE_FACILITY_LOCATIONS Point Locations of collection depot, disposal facilties, mulch distribution centers and recycling centers.
REFUSE_PICKUP_DAYS Polygon Refuse collection areas depicted by service days.
REFUSE_TYPE_AREAS Polygon Refuse collection areas depicted by refuse type (leaf and refuse; refuse only). ES_ATTENDANCE_AREAS Polygon Elementary school attendance areas for Fairfax County Public Schools. Attributes include school name, address and website.
HS_ATTENDANCE_AREAS Polygon High school attendance areas for Fairfax County Public Schools. Attributes include school name, address and website.
MS_ATTENDANCE_AREAS Polygon Middle school attendance areas for Fairfax County Public Schools. Attributes include school name, address and website.
REGIONS Polygon Regions are administrative divisions of the Fairfax County Public Schools.

RADON_POTENTIAL_AREAS Polygon Radon potential of rocks and soils in Fairfax County. From a study conducted by the Fairfax County Health Department during the winters of 1986-87 and 1987-88.
SOILS Polygon 1990 soil classification. Published by the now-defunct Fairfax County Soil Office.
SOIL_SURVEY_FEET Polygon Official 2011 soil classification. Published as a combined effort between Fairfax County, Natural Resource Conservation Service, and the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District. AIRPORTS Polygon Includes Dulles International Airport, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Davison Airfield.

ROADWAYS Line Street centerlines for Fairfax County, City of Fairfax, Falls Church, Arlington and Alexandria, as well as certain routes extending into adjacent areas. Attributes include: street name, route number, class, status, address range, speed limit. CHESAPEAKE_BAY_AREAS Polygon Delineation of Chesapeake Bay Preservation Areas (Resource Protection Areas and Resource Management Areas).

WATERSHEDS Polygon A watershed is an area of land that drains to a particular water body, such as a lake or river. 30 watersheds are delineated for Fairfax County. HISTORIC_OVERLAY_DISTRICTS Polygon Inside an Historic Overlay District certain regulations on development apply which serve to protect historic resources.
PLANNING_AREAS Polygon The county is divided into 4 planning areas.
PLANNING_DISTRICTS Polygon Planning districts are subunits of planning areas.
