      Abstract:
        Geographic boundary, portraying extent and limits of land recognized as Fairfax County, Commonwealth of Virginia. Defined in part by both physical features (Potomac and Occoquan Rivers), and monumented legal boundaries for surrounding jurisdictions (State of Maryland, Arlington, Loudoun, and Prince William Counties, cities of Alexandria and Falls Church). The coverage should contain text and point annotation sub-sets for identification of line features.
      Purpose: To cartographically depict the jurisdictional limits for Fairfax County.
      Supplemental Information:
        Boundary is relatively static, with only minor annexation adjustments over the last 40 years.
        There is not one number for the size of the county that should be used in all cases. Which number should be used depends on the purpose. Water is not included in density calculations (not by Census and not by us). Thus when reporting population density or other density figures, the associated land area should be used (i.e. 395 square miles). When the total land and water area is desired, I would suggest using the 406.8 square miles calculated by GIS. GIS uses a more precise geographical system than the Census Bureau and GIS has the ability to update this figure as intercensal changes occur. In most public documents land area is the figure most quoted because it is tied to population density but that does not mean that it should be the only one used. When numbers are quoted for square miles they should be properly annotated:

        395 square miles (land area)
        406.8 square miles (land and water area)

        In addition, you will find other figures appearing in Demographic Reports documents. These figures are based on real estate parcel information and include only zoned and developable land (water, roads and other nondevelopable land are not included).

        This data set includes over 30 layers of attributed vector map data that were derived primarily from the Fairfax County 1"= 2000' and 1"= 4000' Wall Map Series.
