Sidewalks and Trails in Mount Vernon

Fairfax County's Pedestrian Plan - Fairfax County is committed to pedestrian safety and has embarked on an intensive program to increase pedestrian options along Richmond Highway and throughout the Mount Vernon District. Detailed information can be found on the Pedestrian Plan web page.

The Task Force's final report (very large 7.65 MG .pdf file) was presented to the Board of Supervisors on January 23, 2006. The report addresses pedestrian mobility, safety and education issues in Fairfax County. It is the result of more than a year of work by the task force to fulfill its mission to develop a plan for implementing safe and effective pedestrian facilities and develop a coordinated and collaborative education/outreach program. A copy of the final report can be viewed at the Supervisor's Office and at all Fairfax County Public Library branches.

If you are interested in the maintenance of your sidewalks, or adding new sidewalks to your existing community, please contact the Supervisor's Office.

Recreational Trails - The Mount Vernon District has an extravaganza of recreational trails. Some are paved and some have been created out of natural materials to blend into their surroundings, but all are beautiful. Here are some of our favorites:

Cross County Trail

George Washington Memorial Parkway

Mason Neck State Park

Meadowood Special Recreation Management Area

Pohick Bay

Occoquan Water Trail

Washington & Old Dominion Railroad Regional Park
