Ready Your Roofs Today for More Snow Tomorrow

The Fairfax County Office of Building Code Services encourages owners and tenants of buildings with flat roofs to take precautions to ensure structural safety in preparation for more snow in this week’s forecast. Last weekend’s heavy rainfall, combined with accumulated snow already on flat roofs, caused numerous roof leaks and several structural collapses in the Northern Virginia region, including two in Fairfax County.

Building owners are encouraged to:

  • Inspect roofs for any sign of damage
  • Ensure there is no excessive ponding of water or accumulation of snow/ice
  • Ensure that all roof drainage systems are working properly

If you are not able to safely clear your roof, get professional help. However, if you are equipped to access the roof and can do so safely, use extra caution on slippery surfaces and check for overhead power lines before placing or moving ladders. Deep snow left to melt on flat rooftops can stress the structure and cause leaks not normally found with rainfall. Snow drifts that accumulate at roof/wall intersections and melting snow can work its way past the flashing, resulting in water damage inside the structure.

“We can’t stress enough the importance of these simple steps,” said Sophie Zager, Fairfax County’s Building Official. “It’s much better to spend a few minutes today to ensure your property can withstand another snowfall later this season.”
