Demonstration of High-Tech Bus Scheduled for March 4

Fairfax County and Connex/Yellow Transportation are hosting a demonstration of the innovative new CIVIS bus in the Richmond Highway corridor on Tuesday, March 4, 2003, beginning at 1 p.m. at the south entrance of the Huntington Metrorail Station. Demonstrations of the CIVIS bus will be held in Maryland and other jurisdictions in Virginia as part of a national tour to give transit operators and passengers a chance to see the CIVIS bus in action.

CIVIS is a bus rapid transit vehicle manufactured by Irisbus of France. It has four wide doors and a low floor, allowing for fast and easy boarding and greater accessibility for people with disabilities. The vehicle looks more like a tram than a bus, and runs on rubber tires. CIVIS can operate on its own dedicated lane with signal priority, or on HOV lanes, expressways or ordinary streets. It can be powered by either an all-electric motor, as in a trolleybus, or a clean hybrid diesel-electric motor.

Chairman Katherine K. Hanley, Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, Supervisor Gerry Hyland, Mount Vernon District, and Supervisor Dana Kauffman, Lee District, will be there for the first trip March 4 at 1:30 p.m. Interested persons may ride the CIVIS bus south along Richmond Highway to the South County Center, where it will turn around and return to the Huntington Metrorail Station, making several shuttle trips between the Huntington Metrorail Station and the South County Center. The itinerary is as follows:
