Public Participation Encouraged through Meetings For Laurel Hill Master Planning Process
Several orientation meetings are being scheduled throughout the county to provide residents the opportunity to learn about Laurel Hill (the former Lorton Prison) and share their perspectives and insights on the best use of the 2,400 acres of land and more than 300 buildings on this site. The first meeting, targeted to community-based organizations, will be held Tuesday, March 11, from 7 - 9 p.m. in the Herrity Building, Room 106, 12055 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax. The second meeting, targeted to environmental groups, will be held Saturday, March 15, from 9 - 11 a.m. at Silverbrook Elementary School, 9350 Crosspointe Drive, Fairfax Station.
Additional master planning orientation meetings targeted to different audiences will be held in various locations throughout the county during the spring, summer and fall of 2003. Also, the first session of a three-part countywide workshop, "Creating the Plan: Community-Wide Workshop," will be held in April.
Members of community-based organizations, such as volunteer groups or groups that provide services to others in the community, are encouraged to attend the meeting on March 11 to discuss plans for Laurel Hill in the light of the needs and opportunities facing communities in Fairfax County. Citizens interested in environmental programs and opportunities should attend the March 15 meeting. Their perspectives will be helpful in determining the best use of the unique environmental opportunities at Laurel Hill.
The development at Laurel Hill could include, but is not limited to, space for educational or recreational use, meeting space, office space and program areas for nonprofit organizations. Participants in the meetings can learn more about the property, provide input into ways the property could best be used, and even suggest potential partnerships to aid in the transformation from Lorton Prison to Laurel Hill.
In addition to sharing information about Laurel Hill through these county-sponsored meetings, staff is available to speak to groups and organizations upon request. To schedule a speaker for your organization, to get more information about these meetings or to request special accommodations, call Mary Ashton, assistant to the county executive, at 703-324-2531, TTY 703-222-5494.
