New Look for Fairfax County Web Site
Visitors to the Fairfax County Web site will see a new and improved look to the home page, starting today. The new design features a news section, links to local weather, the commonwealth of Virginia Web site and the federal government Web site. Other improvements to the home page include rearranging the information categories and prominent location of the county's Web privacy policy statement. These improvements are in response to feedback from our constituents about their experience in using the site and opportunities for improvements.
"Citizen feedback is a central part of the county Web site,"
said Fairfax County Chief Information Officer David J. Molchany.
"Beginning with the first major redesign of the site two years ago,
citizens have helped improve the Web site through focus groups and
general e-mail comments." County staff gathered as much detail as
possible on citizens' information-seeking behavior, which was then
incorporated into the new content structure.
The Web site is part of the county's e-government strategy.
"E-government makes it possible to deliver transactions and
information through multiple channels, such as Web sites, interactive
voice response, kiosks and personal digital assistants," said
Molchany. "This allows the delivery of information and service to
happen when and where it is convenient for the customer, who benefits
from this on-demand service. On-demand government tailored to the needs
of those we serve is the power of e-government."
The county Web site, which was first launched at the 1996 Fairfax Fair,
has 15,000 pages of information and averages over 625,000 visits per
month, 7.5 million visits per year. Users can find information about
county programs and services at the click of a mouse and do business with
Fairfax County 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Some of the many online
transactions available include: applying for a county job, scheduling a
building inspection, applying for a library card, paying taxes, reserving
golf tee-times and submitting a consumer complaint form. In addition,
using online databases, site visitors can look up consumer protection
complaints, check FAIRFAX CONNECTOR route schedules, view aerial ortho
photography of the county, search a historical newspaper index, locate
child care, find real estate assessments or search the Human Services
Resource Guide.
