Free Conference Available to Area Small Business Owners
Area small and minority-owned business owners are encouraged to participate in a free conference on government contracting opportunities, sponsored by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments. MAXACCESS will be held May 1, 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., at the new Washington Convention Center located at 801 Mount Vernon Place NW, Washington, D.C., and will feature a wealth of information and opportunities for local firms.
Fairfax County is participating in the event, serving on the planning committee, exhibiting and participating in several panel discussions. The county's Office of Small Business (OSB) and the Department of Purchasing and Supply Management will share their expertise with conference attendees. Experts on small business certification programs, e-commerce and technical assistance will make presentations and local governments and the private sector will have the opportunity to partner with local businesses, and, in some cases, may offer on-the-spot contracting opportunities.
OSB provides small and minority-owned businesses the ability to grow by giving them contracting and bid resources with county departments. OSB also provides workshops and training for businesses on how to sell goods and services to the county.
More and more, small businesses such as McDonald Bradley Inc. (MBI) are working with Fairfax County. In February 2000, MBI was awarded a contract for a registration system for the Fairfax County Public Schools Office of Adult & Community Education. In July 2001, MBI was one of the four contractors (out of 48 proposals received) awarded a one-year contract for consulting services for Web and Internet-based technology. The following year, MBI became one of 30 vendors (out of 80 proposals received) awarded a contact for information technology professionals.
