Inaugural Springfield District Children’s Fair to be Held May 3
The Inaugural Springfield District Children’s Fair, co-sponsored by Supervisor Elaine McConnell and the Fairfax County Park Authority, will be held on Saturday, May 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Burke Lake Park, 7315 Ox Road, Fairfax Station. The fair is the first district-wide event sponsored by the Springfield District Supervisors’ office and is being specifically geared toward children from the Springfield District, but all Fairfax County children and their parents are invited and there is no fee to attend.
“We wanted to initiate a yearly festival for children where all of the children in our district could have an opportunity to enjoy activities that are child centered,” said Springfield Supervisor Elaine McConnell, “a day of fun, games, performances and food that would help bring our children together to play and interact and begin to build a sense of community for the Springfield District.”
Numerous events are planned, including exhibits by the Burke Volunteer Fire Station, Fairfax County Police (West Springfield and Fair Oaks stations) and a BMX demonstration by a local bicycle shop. Performances will also be provided by area church and school groups, including groups from both Centreville and West Springfield High Schools.
Other events include a 5 mile run/walk around Burke Lake and a golf tournament, both to start at 8 a.m. There is a $15 registration fee for the 5 mile run/walk and each participant (up to a maximum of 200) will receive a T-shirt. Registration for the race begins at 6:30 a.m. on site at the marina. To register in the golf tournament, call 703-323-1641, TTY 711 (Virginia Relay Center). There is a $45 entry fee for each two-person team.
Because of the large volume of attendees expected, FASTRAN will provide continuous shuttles from the parking lot of the Fairfax Baptist Temple, located on the Fairfax County Parkway at Burke Lake Road. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the free parking and the free shuttles, which will operate from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.
