Appoints New Fire Chief
Today, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors appointed Michael P. Neuhard as chief of the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, effective June 2, 2003. He succeeds Edward Stinette who retired on May 2, 2003.
As chief, Neuhard will plan, coordinate and direct the overall operation of the Fire and Rescue Department, including fire suppression, hazardous material abatement, emergency medical service, fire prevention, and administrative and support services. He will be responsible for oversight of 1,200 uniformed firefighters, 200 civilians and approximately 350 operational volunteers.
Neuhard earned a Bachelor of Liberal Studies, in Public Safety Response Management from Mary Washington College, Fredericksburg. Prior to this appointment, Neuhard has held various positions within the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department. Starting with Fire and Rescue as a firefighter in 1977, he moved up through the ranks, holding a variety of positions of varying responsibility. By 1989 Neuhard had attained the rank of captain. From 1993 to 1999 Neuhard was the battalion chief, Hazardous Materials and Investigative Services. From August 1999 to July 2000 he was a deputy fire chief, Special Operations. From July 2000 to the present he has been the assistant fire chief for administration.
Neuhard will receive an annual salary of $133,000.
