Making a Difference – It’s a Piece of Cake
Did you know that 13 million children in America are hungry or at risk
of hunger and that one out of every eight children under the age of 12 in
the United States often goes to bed hungry? Did you know that every
fourth person standing in a soup kitchen line is a child? Fairfax County
employees will sponsor a Great American Bake Sale in partnership with
Share Our Strength, the national sponsor of the event, to benefit the
Fairfax County area food banks. The initiative was begun by Debra
Bianchi, deputy director of the Office of Public affairs, as a team
building experience that would reach out and give back to the community.
By participating in the bake sale as a customer, citizens and employees
will make a difference in the lives of children in the Fairfax County
community. The Great American Bake Sale will be held on Friday, July 11,
7 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Government Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway,
Fairfax, on the first floor. For more information and directions, call
703-324-3187, TTY 703-324-2935.
The Fairfax Fatherhood Collaborative
Fairfax County agencies, Virginia State departments, nonprofit and
faith-based organizations and interested citizens have come together to
form the Fairfax Fatherhood Collaborative (FFC). The initial focus of the
FFC includes identifying and promoting best practice prevention,
intervention and mediation strategies that target fathers and
fathers-to-be, especially in regard to issues facing non-custodial
fathers. Educational efforts are made to generate a common vision and
enhanced public perception about fatherhood, strengthening and promoting
effective parenting skills, providing alternatives to incarceration for
child support arrears and providing supportive services to address
employment, mental health, substance abuse and other barriers encountered
in meeting parental obligations. For more information call Derwin
Overton, 703-246-3033, TTY 711.
