Discounted Bus Fares Offered in Richmond Highway Corridor
Starting June 29, certain bus fares in the Richmond Highway Corridor are discounted to 50 cents. The discount-ride program includes these routes:
Metrobus Route 9A
The discounted bus routes are part of the Bus Fare Buydown program, which is focusing on the Richmond Highway Corridor to encourage motorists to try transit instead. The Bus Fare Buydown program is a promotion funded by the commonwealth of Virginia to increase Metrorail ridership by lowering the fares on bus routes that serve Metrorail stations. The program offered discounted rides in the Dulles Corridor last year, in the I-95 Franconia-Springfield Corridor the year before that and in the I-66 Corridor three years ago. The Bus Fare Buydown program has proven to be successful in the past, increasing ridership each year:
| Year | Corridor | Increase in Ridership |
| FY 01 | I-66 Corridor | + 19.3% |
| FY 02 | I-95 Franconia-Springfield | + 10.6% |
| FY 03 | Dulles Corridor | + 19.6% (YTD) |
The discounted fares in the Richmond Highway Corridor are expected to remain in effect through June 2004.
