FAIRFAX CONNECTOR Implements Fare Increase
Starting June 29, FAIRFAX CONNECTOR bus fares will go from 50 cents to 75 cents. Also effective June 29, fares on regional express bus service and transfer credits will change. The express bus fare will go from $2 to $2.50, affecting FAIRFAX CONNECTOR routes 383, 384 and 385. Transfers from bus-to-bus will continue to be honored, but passengers will have to pay the difference in fares if transferring from FAIRFAX CONNECTOR to Metrobus or any other bus system with higher fares.
Also, Metro has decided to no longer sell the red tickets, valued at 50 cents. These tickets are popular with some FAIRFAX CONNECTOR passengers. Any previously purchased red tickets will be honored, with a value of 50 cents, until Dec. 31, 2003.
Passengers age 65 or older and passengers with a disability who have a Metro ID or Medicare card will pay the same fare, after June 29, as they pay today. The fare for local bus service will continue to be 50 cents, and the fare for express bus service on routes 383, 384, 385 and 989 will continue to be $1.
A special bus fare discount program on bus routes in the Richmond Highway Corridor will begin at the same time as the June 29 fare changes. This program is effective only for one year. The special Richmond Highway Corridor Bus Fare Buydown program offers a discounted fare of 50 cents on FAIRFAX CONNECTOR routes 105, 106 and 107 and Metrobus 9A. The fare on these four bus routes will be 50 cents during the 12-month period from June 29, 2003, until June 30, 2004.
Public meetings regarding the county’s proposed budget took place in April at the Fairfax County Government Center in order to receive public testimony and input regarding the proposed fare changes.
The Fairfax County Adopted Budget for FY 2004 includes a FAIRFAX CONNECTOR fare change that reduces the discount of the base fare from 50 cents to 25 cents. The current FAIRFAX CONNECTOR base fare is $1. The county reduces this fare by discounting 50 cents of the price, resulting in a 50-cent fare to our riders. With the reduction of the discount by 25 cents, this results in an increase to our riders from a 50-cent to a 75-cent fare.
