Keeping Our Hometown Beautiful
Annual Effort to Beautify Annandale Ongoing Since 1984
More than 100 volunteers are expected to show up on Saturday, Aug. 2, for the Annandale Clean Up Project, an annual community beautification event since 1984. Volunteers will pick up litter from area roads, remove illegal signs, cut and remove grass from curbs and even clean bus shelters.
Organized by Annandale resident Helen Winter, along with members of the Korean-American community, volunteers will assemble in the parking lot of the George Mason Regional Library, 7001 Little River Turnpike, Annandale, at 9 a.m. for refreshments provided by area businesses before breaking up into teams of four to six volunteers. Each team will be given specific areas to clean and will depart for their respective areas at approximately 9:15 a.m.
"It's all about keeping our hometown looking beautiful," said organizer Helen Winter, who has lead the annual initiative since its inception in 1984. "The idea is to have a better quality of life and it's not very pleasant and conducive if you don't have a nice place to live and work."
This year's effort also marks the partnership of past volunteers and long-time Annandale residents, such as Winter, with newer residents of the community such as the Korean-American community. "The two communities are really coming together on this effort," added Winter.
Volunteers are encouraged to wear comfortable clothes and bring gloves and rakes if possible. Safety vests, trash bags, refreshments and Annandale Clean Up Project t-shirts will be provided for each volunteer. Certificates of service can also be provided if necessary.
Additional volunteers are still needed for the effort. For more information or to volunteer, contact either Helen Winter at 703-256-9620, TTY 711, or Michael Kwon at 703-731-1950, TTY 711.
