Fairfax County has declared a state of local emergency in anticipation of the damaging effects of Hurricane Isabel. County Executive Tony Griffin signed the local emergency declaration at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, which is effective today and continues until the emergency situation is over.
The declaration officially activates the county’s emergency action procedures and empowers the Director of Emergency Management with “powers, functions and duties” as prescribed by state law and the ordinances, resolutions and approved plans of the County of Fairfax in order to mitigate the expected results of the hurricane.
The Director of Emergency Management will activate the county’s emergency operations center at 1 p.m. today to coordinate local government action to prevent or alleviate the damage, loss, hardship or suffering threatened by the impending hurricane.
At 2 p.m. today, the county will open temporary shelters in four public
schools:
• Chantilly High School, 4201 Stringfellow Road, Chantilly
• Edison High School, 5801 Franconia Road, Alexandria
• Marshall High School, 7731 Leesburg Pike, Falls Church
