Fairfax County to Close Three of the Temporary Shelters
In response to a decreased demand for shelter facilities, Fairfax County
officials are closing three of the four temporary shelters opened on
Thursday, Sept. 18, for those impacted residents in need of a place to
stay. These three shelters closed at 12 p.m. this afternoon. The three
closed shelters were located in the following Fairfax County public
schools:
• Chantilly High School, 4201 Stringfellow Road, Chantilly
• Edison High School, 5801 Franconia Road, Alexandria
• Marshall High School, 7731 Leesburg Pike, Falls Church
The shelter at Whitman Middle School, 2500 Parkers Lane, Alexandria, will remain open until further notice.
This temporary emergency shelter is intended for any residents who feel they cannot stay in their homes as a result of damage from the storm. County and Red Cross staff will be on hand at the remaining shelter. The shelter has cots and blankets. Food will also be available. No animals are allowed at Whitman, except service animals. Therefore, residents should make alternative arrangements for their pets prior to going to the shelter.
If you decide to come to a shelter, please bring the following:
• Pillow
• Medications (bring a cooler if any medications require
refrigeration)
• Flashlight
• Toiletries
• Change of clothes
• Special items such as diapers and formula for babies
No alcohol, smoking, firearms or illegal drugs are permitted in the shelters.
Residents needing more information about the shelters can call the
county’s Emergency Information Line at 703-817-7771, TTY 711.
