Boil Water Notice Lifted for Northern Virginia
The Virginia Department of Health confirmed that sampling conducted by water utilities in Northern Virginia verify that the water is safe for drinking and cooking. It is no longer necessary to boil the water.
The jurisdictions that recommended customers boil water were Fairfax County, City of Alexandria, Dale City, Eastern Loudoun County, Town of Herndon, Town of Vienna, and Ft. Belvoir.
Due to the loss of power caused by Hurricane Isabel, and subsequent loss of pressure in the water system, customers were advised to boil water since there was a possibility that the water quality may have been compromised. As a precautionary measure, the boil water notice was issued early Friday morning. Once water pressure in the system was restored, sampling was conducted on Friday and Saturday to test for potentially harmful bacteria.
Water tests, completed this evening, confirmed that the water was not compromised and no harmful bacteria were found in the sampling. Therefore, there is no need for customers to continue boiling water.
Operations for these water systems are returned to normal.
