Teens Encouraged to Enroll in Vienna Teen
Neighborhood
College to Learn about Their Government and Community
Oct. 8 is the deadline for teens to apply for the Vienna Teen Neighborhood College, which begins on Tuesday, Oct. 28. Approximately 20 teens will be chosen for this unique community leadership program that teaches ninth through 12th graders about their local government and offers opportunities to develop individual leadership skills that can strengthen their neighborhood and promote a strong sense of community. Registration forms are available at the Vienna Community Center and area teens are encouraged to register for this unique opportunity.
The Vienna Teen Neighborhood College is offered by the Fairfax County Department of Systems Management for Human Services in partnership with the Vienna Community Center and the Vienna-Madison Community Coalition. The program, which has received an Achievement Award from the Virginia Municipal League, is free for participants. Class size is limited.
Using a combination of lectures, group discussions and field work, students will participate in an engaging, hands-on curriculum that was specifically developed to help students learn about local government and improve organizational and problem-solving skills. Participants will learn about programs and services offered by the Town of Vienna and Fairfax County, cultural competency, how to run effective meetings, public speaking tips, how to solve problems and make decisions with others, and how to get involved and make a difference in the community. Through a field work practicum, students may earn credit for government or International Baccalaureate service requirements, scouts, college and scholarship applications.
Meeting dates and times for the five different sessions are:
• Tuesday, Oct. 28 (5:45 to 8 p.m.)
• Wednesday, Nov. 5 (5:45 to 8 p.m.)
• Wednesday, Nov. 12 (5:45 to 8 p.m.)
• Saturday, Nov. 15 (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.)
• Wednesday, Nov. 19 (5:45 to 8 p.m.)
Sessions will be held at the Vienna Community Center, 120 Cherry Street SE, Vienna. For more information about the Vienna Teen Neighborhood College, call 703-787-4998, TTY 703-803-7914 or e-mail Robin.Patton@fairfaxcounty.gov.
