Dedication and Open House to Celebrate
Newly Renovated Springfield District Governmental Center

Various state and local elected officials will be on hand at 10 a.m, Saturday, Oct. 18, for the dedication and ribbon cutting celebrating the opening of the newly renovated Springfield District Governmental Center, located at 6140 Rolling Road, Springfield. The open house of the Springfield District Supervisor's Office, and the Police and Fire and Rescue stations features a variety of activities, and will begin immediately following the ceremony around 11 a.m.

As part of the celebration that day, participants from the community will be invited to sign a guest book. A commemorative plaque will be made using the imprint of those signatures and will be later displayed at the governmental center.

Another memorable activity at this ceremony will be the sealing of a time capsule. This capsule will contain community newspapers and newsletters, various items of police and fire memorabilia including annual reports and uniform patches, and other items significant to the community.

Attendees at this event can enjoy tours of the facility including the engine bay of the fire station, police station and the Springfield District Supervisor's Office. Outside, police will have tactical trucks, the marine patrol, the K-9 unit and a child safety seat demonstration. Several police cars will be on display including the oldest county police vehicle, a black, restored 1940 Plymouth that represents what the county's first police cars looked like. Some new traffic control cars like the Camaro Z28 police cruisers will also be on display.

Fire and Rescue will display Foam Unit 26, which is the airport crash unit; their mobile crime lab; the mass casualty unit; and fire truck 422. Children who attend will be excited to meet McGruff the Crime Dog, Sparky the Fire Dog, and a clown handing out balloons.

Musical entertainment will be provided by a disc jockey. Light refreshments will be provided courtesy of Einstein Bros Bagels and Whole Foods.

For more information about the event call the Springfield District Supervisor's Office at 703-451-8873, TTY 711.
