Schedule for the 2004-2005 Fairfax County Area Plans Review
The schedule for the 2004-2005 Fairfax County Area Plans Review has been established to begin with the 2004 North County cycle, followed by the South County cycle in 2005. The APR process is an opportunity for citizens of Fairfax County to participate in updating the Comprehensive Plan. Fairfax County’s Comprehensive Plan is a guide to decision-making about the county’s built and natural environment. On Sept. 29, 2003, the Board of Supervisors endorsed the Planning Commission recommendation to begin the 2004-2005 APR cycle.
At the beginning of the APR process, anyone wishing to propose an amendment to the Comprehensive Plan can submit a nomination during the submission period mentioned above for consideration by county staff, community APR task forces and the Planning Commission. Nominations that are acted upon favorably by the Planning Commission will be forwarded to the Board of Supervisors for consideration as an amendment to the Comprehensive Plan. Public hearings before the Planning Commission and the Board of Supervisors provide opportunities for citizen comment. If the Board votes to adopt an amendment, the Comprehensive Plan is changed accordingly.
The nomination form and specific information on nomination eligibility and submission deadlines will be published in the Citizen’s Guide to the 2004 Area Plans Review, available in January 2004. The Citizen’s Guide will also be posted on the Department of Planning and Zoning Web page at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dpz. For the 2004 North County Cycle, the submission period will start in April 2004 with a deadline in May 2004. The review process will be completed in July 2005 after Board action. The North County cycle includes the land area found in the following supervisor districts: Dranesville, Hunter Mill, Providence and Sully. The 2005 South County cycle includes the land area in the remaining supervisor districts. The 2005 cycle will have a submission period in September-October 2005.
The review process is designed to ensure that the Comprehensive Plan reflects the county’s changing needs. Anyone interested in the Comprehensive Plan is encouraged to participate in the APR process for several reasons: the Comprehensive Plan affects what happens in Fairfax County communities; participating in the process ensures that citizens are aware if any changes have been proposed for their communities; and the review process will not take place again for several years.
Information about the APR process will be posted on the Department of Planning and Zoning Web page at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dpz. The public is encouraged to visit periodically to see if any new information has been posted.
