Harrison Lane Trail to be Dedicated on Oct. 28
Tuesday, Oct. 28, at 9:30 a.m. at the intersection of Ransom Place and Harrison Lane near Groveton Elementary School, 6900 Harrison Lane, Alexandria, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will celebrate the completion of the new Harrison Lane Trail. Members of the community are welcome to join in the ceremony which will feature a ribbon cutting to commemorate the trail’s completion.
Various local officials including the Lee District supervisor and the chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will be on hand to officially open this new section of the county’s network of non-motorized trails. Representatives from A&M Concrete Corporation, contractor for the project, have been invited to participate. Also, students and administrators of Groveton Elementary will participate.
Officials of Groveton Elementary School anticipate this trail will receive heavy use from children walking or bicycling to and from school. The creation of trails like this one throughout the county contributes to a more walkable Fairfax, one of the goals of the county’s pedestrian safety initiative.
Completed under budget and 10 months faster than similar projects, Harrison Lane Trail was part of a unique pilot program in the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services, Capital Facilities, that used a team approach to manage it. This allowed for a more proactive approach to problem solving which led to bringing the project to the construction phase more quickly. In the end, much of the savings in administrative costs were due to the reduction in time in bringing the project to the construction phase.
In light of the significant time and capital saved, an estimated $177,500, this project was clearly a success. Even with the accelerated schedule, time was allotted early in the process to consider any concerns or input the residents and stakeholders may have in designing this project.
