Remember to Display Decals to Avoid Fines

Nov. 15 is Decal Day. Fairfax County residents, including military personnel, are reminded that they must display their blue Fairfax County decals for tax year 2004 on all vehicles by midnight, Nov. 15, or risk getting a ticket and a fine.

Most county residents already have their decals, thanks to a new customer service initiative by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. For the first time this year, decals were mailed along with personal property tax bills to residents who had paid all prior year taxes and had no unpaid parking tickets. As a result, many people have been displaying their new blue decals since July. Other residents received their decals when they paid their bills or registered their cars in the county.

Decals should be affixed to the immediate right of the state Safety Inspection sticker. Prior year decals should be removed before affixing the current year decal. Motorcycle decals should be affixed to the bike's fork next to the state Safety Inspection sticker. Beginning Nov. 16, police officers will issue traffic tickets and fines will be assessed for those vehicles that are not in compliance.

Decals can be obtained at the Department of Tax Administration, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Suite 223, in Fairfax. Decal fees are $25/car, truck or van; $18/motorcycle; and $23/taxicab. There is no proration for decals. Vehicle decals will be issued at no cost to active duty military personnel who reside in the county due to military orders, and who are the sole owners of vehicles garaged or parked in the county and who maintain their legal residences in a state other than Virginia. Vehicles with out-of-state license plates are required to display a county decal if they are stored here.

Residents of the Towns of Herndon and Vienna must purchase a town decal, available from their respective Town Halls. Residents of the Town of Clifton must purchase a town tag from the town clerk. The decal schedule for those specific areas may be different from Fairfax County.
