Customer Comments on Hurricane Isabel Outages
The public utilities staff of the State Corporation Commission will hold a public meeting in Fairfax County for residents affected by lengthy electric and telephone service outages resulting from Hurricane Isabel. Customer input is an important part of the SCC staff analysis of the service restoration efforts of Virginia's electric and telephone providers following the Sept. 18 storm. The meeting will be held on Thursday, Oct. 30, at 7 p.m. at the Fairfax County Government Center, Conference Rooms 4 & 5, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax.
Members of the public who would like an opportunity to speak are encouraged to arrive early and sign up. Once all speakers have finished, there will be an opportunity to ask questions of SCC staff and electric and telephone company representatives.
Recognizing that not everyone is able to attend the public meeting, the SCC is accepting written comments. Comments can be submitted through the Web site at www.state.va.us/scc/isabeloutages.htm, by e-mail to isabeloutages@scc.state.va.us or in writing to Isabel Outages, State Corporation Commission, P.O. Box 1197, Richmond, VA 23218. Comments will be received through Nov.19.
The SCC staff analysis of utility company performance relative to hurricane-related outages is expected to take several months to complete. The SCC's Division of Energy Regulation and Division of Communications will weigh the severity of the storm and the resulting response by various electric and telephone utilities. SCC staff will attempt to identify company-initiated plans for improving response to future storms and, if necessary, suggest possible corrective actions to make Virginia's utility systems less vulnerable to storms.
Director of Energy Regulation William F. Stephens and Director of Communications William Irby both agree that the objective "is to learn what we can from the storm. The learning starts with hearing from those people who were without power for as long as two weeks and without phone service for nearly a month."
