Fairfax County Web Site Among Nation's Best
Fairfax County has one of the best government Web sites in the country, according to the Center for Digital Government, an international research and advisory institute on information technology in government and education. More than 260 public-sector Web sites entered the contest. A panel of IT experts judged each entry based on its innovation, Web-based delivery of public services, efficiency, economy and functionality for improved citizen access.
First launched in 1996, the Fairfax County Web site has become an integral part of the county’s e-government strategy. “E-government makes it possible to deliver transactions and information through multiple channels, such as Web sites, interactive voice response, kiosks and personal digital assistants,” said Fairfax County Chief Information Officer David J. Molchany. “This allows the delivery of information and service to happen when and where it is convenient for the customer, who benefits from this on-demand service. On-demand government tailored to the needs of those we serve is the power of e-government.”
A cornerstone of the Fairfax County Web site is citizen input. “Citizen feedback is a central part of the county Web site,” said Molchany. “Citizens have helped improve the Web site through focus groups and general e-mail comments. We use this feedback to make continued improvements to the site.” In addition, county staff gathered as much detail as possible on citizens’ information-seeking behavior, which was then incorporated into a major redesign of the Web site.
Other local government jurisdictions receiving recognition include Virginia Beach, Va.; Montgomery County, Md.; Boston, Mass.; Phoenix, Ariz.; Dallas, Texas; Santa Clara County, Calif.; Marion County/Indianapolis, Ind.; and King County, Wash.
