Fairfax County Celebrates GIS Day on Nov. 19
On Wednesday, Nov. 19, Fairfax County government agencies will showcase their achievements and educate their peers and the public about their use of Geographic Information Systems. Activities will include the announcement of annual GIS Day Excellence Awards by Supervisor Connolly; GIS exhibitors from numerous county agencies; live demonstrations of GIS products, services, and “internal” business processes; the GIS excellence awards gallery of maps, and drawings for GIS Day T-shirts throughout the day. GIS Day is a global event during which GIS users work to expand the understanding of how GIS technology and geography makes a difference in our lives.
GIS, a computer-based tool used to map and analyze objects and events, combines the power of a database with the visualization capabilities offered by maps. More than half a million people in the world use GIS to solve problems in areas such as environmental protection, pollution, health care, land use, asset deployment and routing, natural resources, conservation, business efficiency, education and social inequities.
The GIS Excellence Awards recognize individual county employees, teams and departments who have demonstrated exceptional utilization of the county’s GIS. Award winners have used GIS to improve business processes, perform geographic analysis, visualize projects and improve efficiency.
The GIS Exhibit Hall will include agency employees representing Fairfax County Fire & Rescue, Health, Human Services, Planning & Zoning, Police, Transportation, Park Authority, Economic Development Authority, Board of Supervisors, and Public Works & Environmental Services including Stormwater Planning, Wastewater Management, and Urban Forestry. In addition, the Natural Resources Conservation Service and Northern Virginia Soil & Water Conservation District will be represented. Guests will be able to see how these agencies are using GIS to deliver enhanced services as well as discuss those uses with each agency’s representatives.
The GIS Day celebration will kick off at 9 a.m. with the GIS Excellence Awards Ceremony. The exhibit hall which will include county employees conducting live demonstrations of GIS products, services, and “internal” business processes, the GIS excellence awards gallery of maps, and drawings for GIS Day T-shirts will take place 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. All GIS Day activities will be held at the Fairfax County Government Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax.
