The Recycle Guys Are Coming to Town
The “Recycle Guys” are coming to town to remind everyone that when it comes to recycling, “it begins with you and me.” These seven cartoon characters, who have taken the country by storm, will now become part of Fairfax County’s efforts to raise awareness about the importance of recycling. The Recycle Guys public education campaign, born in South Carolina, began in January 1997. Now six years later and thousands of television appearances later, the “Guys” are singing, dancing and educating the public about recycling around the country from Arizona to Pennsylvania.
The “Guys” will make their official debut in Fairfax County at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15 at Fairfax County’s Community Recycling Roadshow at Herndon High School, 700 Bennett Street, Herndon. They will present awards to the winners of the “Name the Recycle Guys” contest being held in conjunction with the Fairfax County Public Schools. (After all, who wants to be called just “R”?) Each winner receives a $50 gift certificate to a local bookstore and a limited edition Recycle Guys baseball cap.
The Community Recycling Roadshow will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15. At the RoadShow, residents will have a chance to clean out their homes for the holidays and help the environment and local nonprofit organizations by bringing computers, bicycles, cell phones and athletic shoes for recycling. The computers will be recycled by ServiceSource, a local nonprofit that provides jobs for people with disabilities. There is a $7 processing fee for monitors; all other computer components will be processed free of charge. The bicycles will be collected, repaired and shipped overseas by Pedals for Progress. There is a $10 suggested donation to help defray shipping costs. Athletic shoes are being collected by the Fairfax County recycling program in partnership with the NIKE Reuse A Shoe program. The shoes will be ground into material for new playgrounds and athletic fields. The cell phones are being collected by Fairfax Opportunities Alternatives and Resources to be given to domestic assault victims.
The event is co-sponsored by Herndon Students
Against Global Abuse and the Clean Fairfax Council. For more information
