Recycling Holiday Leftovers
Fairfax County recycling officials are offering residents several tips
on reducing and disposing of waste during the busy holiday season:
• During the first two weeks of January, residents who have county trash
collection can have their Christmas trees picked up without having to
call for a special collection. Residents should place their trees at the
curb by 6 a.m. on their regular collection day. Trees should be free of
lights, stands, ornaments, plastic bags and the like, and placed next to
the regular trash but not made part of it. If your trash is collected by
a private hauler, contact the hauler or your Homeowner’s Association to
determine the tree collection service provided.
• If your trash hauler collects mixed paper, consider recycling your
wrapping paper. Make sure it is free of tape and ribbons. Foil wrapping
paper is not recyclable. To find out if your private trash hauler
collects mixed paper, contact the hauler directly or your Homeowner’s
Association.
• Consider donations to needy families. Remember, when you clean out
your closets, you fill someone else’s. Call the Fairfax/Falls Church
Community Services Board at 703-324-7000, TTY 703-802-3015.
For more information or to find out if you have county trash service in
your neighborhood, call the Fairfax County Solid Waste Management Program
at 703-802-3322, TTY 711. You can also find recycling information on the
county’s Web site at
