Four New Members Appointed to Planning Commission

At its regular meeting on Monday, Jan. 5, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors appointed four new members to the 12-member Fairfax County Planning Commission.

Supervisor Dana Kauffman, Lee District, appointed Rodney Lusk to replace Jack Kelso who is moving out of the area. Lusk's term on the Fairfax County Park Authority as an At-Large Representative just expired, so now he will move to the commission in the Lee District spot. Lusk is the manager of the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority's Capital Attraction Program and previously served as Chairman Gerald E. Connolly's land use aide for Providence District.

Both the Providence and Dranesville District seats were vacated as of Jan. 1. Former commissioners Joan M. DuBois (Dranesville) and Linda Q. Smyth (Providence) were elected to the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and today appointed their replacements to fill the remainder of their terms (one year).

DuBois appointed Nancy Hopkins, a procurement contracts manager for IBM Corporation USA. Hopkins served as vice president of the Wolftrap Woods Homes Association from 1999 - 2001, and recently served as a Planning and Zoning Committee member (1999 - 2003) for the McLean Citizens Association Board of Directors.

Kenneth Lawrence will fill the Providence seat. Retired since 1998, Lawrence had a career in instructional design and currently chairs the Briarwood Citizens Association Land Use Committee and is a member of the American Lung Association of Virginia's Government Relations Committee.

Ilryong Moon (At-Large) left his seat after being elected to the Fairfax County School Board. Connolly appointed James R. Hart to fill that position. Hart is currently a member of the Fairfax County Board of Zoning Appeals, and has also served on the Fairfax County Board of Equalization of Real Estate Assessments (1999 - 2000) and chaired the Countywide Non-motorized Transportation (Trails) Committee (1999 - 2000). He is the director of Hart & Horan P.C.

Also reappointed to terms on the commission were Suzanne F. Harsel, Braddock District, and Ronald W. Koch, Sully District. Harsel has served on the commission since May 1982 and Koch has represented Sully District since its creation.

The other members of the Planning Commission are: Walter L. Alcorn, At-Large; John R. Byers, Mount Vernon; Frank A. de la Fe, Hunter Mill; Janet R. Hall, Mason; Peter F. Murphy, Springfield; and Laurie Frost Wilson, At-Large.

The Planning Commission will meet next on Wednesday, Jan. 14, at 8:15 p.m. in the Board Auditorium of the Government Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax. For more information, call 703-324-2865, TTY 703-324-7951, or visit www.fairfaxcounty.gov/gov/planning.
