Mount Vernon District Supervisor to Host Annual Town Meeting
Supervisor Gerry Hyland will present Mount Vernon’s 17th Annual Town Meeting on Saturday, Jan. 31, from 7:45 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Mount Vernon High School’s Little Theatre, 8515 Old Mount Vernon Road, Alexandria.
Directed primarily to residents of the Mount Vernon District and those along Richmond Highway, the meeting is open to all county residents. The format provides a local forum to hear firsthand the significant issues involving Mount Vernon, as well as the county as a whole, while creating the opportunity for citizens to meet their elected representatives and express their views and concerns.
Beginning at 7:45 a.m., interested participants will have an opportunity to view many displays and exhibits in the school cafeteria. Last year there were more than 60 exhibitors including many county agencies, such as the Office of Public Affairs, Fairfax County Park Authority, Police, Fire & Rescue, Tax Administration and Family Services to name a few. Several non-county agencies also will be represented.
Commencing at 9 a.m. with a welcome to participants and introductions of the panelists, the program will include a virtual bus ride through the Mount Vernon District with Hyland highlighting changes which occurred in the area during 2003.
The presentations, which begin at 9:45 a.m., include:
- "County Priorities in Your First Year as Chairman," Chairman Gerald E. Connolly, Fairfax County Board of Supervisors
- "Challenges and Opportunities for Fairfax County in 2004," County Executive Tony Griffin
- "An Overview of Fiscal Year 2005 Budget and Taxes," Chief Financial Officer Ed Long
- "Fort Belvoir New Programs and Development," Col. Thomas Williams, garrison commander
- "Transportation Plans for the Coming Year," Lee District Supervisor Dana Kauffman
- "Public Safety — 2003 in Review and What Lies Ahead," Capt. Larry Moser, Mount Vernon Police Station commander; Chief Mike Neuhard, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department
- "Mount Vernon Schools' Successes and Challenges," Dr. Daniel Domenech, Fairfax County Public Schools superintendent and Dan Storck, Mount Vernon School Board member
There will be several opportunities throughout the program for the audience to ask questions of the panelists. Immediately following the town meeting, participants can enjoy food provided by local restaurants for a Taste of Mount Vernon. The town meeting will be videotaped and shown on Fairfax County cable Channel 16 on Saturday, Feb. 7, at 9 a.m., Friday, Feb. 13, at 8 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 21, at 9 a.m.
