Fairfax County Recertified as a Gold Chesapeake Bay Partner Community
Fairfax County has been recertified by the Chesapeake Bay Program as a Gold Chesapeake Bay Partner Community, based on achievement of a set of benchmarks that support the protection and restoration of the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The selection is based on Fairfax County's population and the percentage of benchmarks met in four categories: improving water quality, promoting sound land use, protecting and restoring living resources and habitat, and engaging the community. A presentation will be made before the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors at its regular meeting on Monday, Jan. 26.
The awards are sponsored by the Chesapeake Bay Program and the Local Government Advisory Committee. The committee was created by the Chesapeake Bay Program in 1988 in recognition of the critical role that the more than 1,650 local governments in the watershed play in the partnership's ability to achieve its goals -- they have statutory authority over stormwater, land use, and water and sewer management.
Launched in 1997, the Bay Partner Community Program recognizes local governments in the Chesapeake Bay watershed for their commitment to protecting and restoring the Bay and its tributaries. Fairfax County was first designated as a Gold Chesapeake Bay Partner Community in 1997.
The Chesapeake Bay Program is restoring the Bay through a partnership among the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (representing the federal government), the state of Maryland, the commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the commonwealth of Virginia, the District of Columbia, the Chesapeake Bay Commission and participating citizen advisory groups.
