The work of the task force includes identifying uses for approximately 85 of the 2,300 acres on the Laurel Hill property. The 85 acres contain the former central/maximum security facility. Most of the buildings on the site are designated as historically significant.
After public comments are received and discussed, the task force will finalize recommendations, which are anticipated to be presented to the Board of Supervisors in spring 2004. The master planning process for Laurel Hill is an intensive effort that began in the fall of 2002 and will continue through late spring 2004. During this period, the Adaptive Reuse Citizens Task Force and the Fairfax County Park Authority have worked to develop a set of ideas and recommendations for the future use of the 2,300-acre Laurel Hill area.
