Fairfax County Sponsors Meeting on Future of Solid Waste Management
On Thursday, Feb. 26, from 7 to 9 p.m., Fairfax County will hold a public meeting to seek resident input on the county's draft Solid Waste Management Plan. The meeting will be held at the Mount Vernon Governmental Center, 2511 Parkers Lane, Alexandria.
The plan provides an integrated management system and long-range planning for waste and recycling for the next 20 years. The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality requires jurisdictions in the commonwealth to submit new solid waste management plans by July 1, 2004.
Solid waste includes almost everything we throw away or recycle, including yard waste, brush, household trash, recyclables, commercial trash, industrial waste and construction debris. An integrated management system controls everything that happens to solid waste: collection, transfer, recycling and disposal.
Jeff Smithberger, of the county's solid waste management program explains, "The public meetings provide an excellent forum for community involvement in shaping the future of solid waste in the county."
The meeting format will consist of a brief overview of the draft plan with time for audience questions and comments. Issues to be discussed during the meeting include waste generation rates, residential trash collection, business recycling requirements, public outreach, use of the waste-to-energy facility after 2011, handing of construction and demolition debris and the future capacity of the transfer and disposal facilities.
To create the draft plan, county staff sought community input via an online survey (over 1,400 respondents) and at 80 public meetings and events over the past 18 months. Based on community input, county staff created a draft plan. The plan is ready for public review and further comment during five upcoming public meetings in February and March. The draft plan will be available on the county's Web site at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dpwes/swmp/default.htm by Feb. 15 for review prior to the meetings.
