Flu Vaccines Available in Fairfax County

A limited supply of adult and pediatric influenza (flu) vaccines is now available throughout Fairfax County, announced Gloria Addo-Ayensu, M.D., county health director.

The Fairfax County Health Department is offering the vaccines at each of its five clinics to any county resident. County health officials encourage residents to call their nearest Health Department facility for vaccine availability and clinic hours.

"While flu cases appear to be declining, influenza activity is still occurring throughout the county and the state. Those who have not yet received a flu vaccine should get one to protect themselves against this illness," said Addo-Ayensu. "The flu vaccine is especially important for anyone considered to be at a higher risk for flu complications, such as adults 65 and older, children and anyone with a chronic health condition," she added.

In addition, international travelers are being cautioned by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that in certain parts of the world, especially in tropical climates, influenza can occur at any time during the year. Travelers who are at increased risk of developing influenza-related complications and healthy people who wish to decrease their risk of becoming ill with influenza should receive the current flu vaccine. This year's vaccine will protect against three viruses and also will offer protection against variants of the viruses.
