Fairfax County Wins Top Recycling Event Award
Fairfax County was recently recognized as the first-place winner of the second national America Recycles Day Inc. award contest, which recognizes organizations that held extraordinary community recycling events. Fairfax County took top honors and was awarded $7,500 for its Nov. 15 America Recycles Day events, which included the launch of the Recycle Guys awareness campaign, a community recycling road show featuring collections of computers, shoes, cell phones and bicycles to benefit local community organizations and extensive media coverage.
Accepting the first place award on behalf of the county, Meredith Eisenberg, public outreach manager for the Fairfax County Solid Waste Division said, "America Recycles Day provided a rallying point to get our community excited about recycling. We are thrilled to have won the award."
Over 850 events were held throughout the nation on Nov. 15 in celebration of America Recycles Day. Organizations with events listed on the ARD Web site were eligible to compete for a share of the $25,000 award sponsored by the Recycle America Alliance, Inc. Winners were announced earlier this month. Entries were judged on the event's originality and creativity, amount of local participation, recognition and success created and the ability of the event to be replicated.
Richard Abramowitz, America Recycles Day board member and regional manager for the Recycle America Alliance said, "We've noticed a significant increase in recycling events this year and are proud to be a sponsor of America Recycles Day and this award contest. The event held in Fairfax County was one of several outstanding events held throughout the United States. We're pleased to be able to recognize organizations that went the extra mile for recycling and America Recycles Day."
America Recycles Day Inc. is a national all-volunteer, non-profit organization, which sponsors an annual event with the goal of educating and encouraging Americans to recycle and buy recycled products. Since its inception in 1997, the ARD campaign has grown substantially in participation and now encourages recycling activities throughout the United States and several territories.
