Fairfax County Sponsors Meetings on Future of Solid Waste
On Tuesday, March 9, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., Fairfax County will hold public meetings to seek resident input on the county's draft Solid Waste Management Plan. The meetings will be held at the Fairfax County Government Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax.
The plan provides an integrated management system and long-range planning for waste and recycling for the next 20 years. The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality requires jurisdictions in Virginia to submit new solid waste management plans by July 1, 2004.
Solid waste includes almost everything we throw away or recycle, including yard waste, brush, household trash, recyclables, commercial trash, industrial waste and construction debris. An integrated management system controls everything that happens to solid waste: collection, transfer, recycling and disposal.
Jeff Smithberger of the county's solid waste management program explains, "The public meetings provide an excellent forum for community involvement in shaping the future of solid waste collection in the county."
The meeting format will consist of a brief overview of the draft plan with time for audience questions and comments. Issues to be discussed during the meeting include waste generation rates, residential trash collection, recycling requirements, public outreach, use of the waste-to-energy facility after 2011, handing of construction and demolition debris, and the future capacity of the transfer and disposal facilities.
To create the draft plan, county staff sought community input via an online survey (over 1400 respondents) and at 80 public meetings and events over the past 18 months. Based on community input, county staff created a draft plan. The plan is ready for public review and further comment during the upcoming public meetings.

Additional information about the plan is available at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dpwes/swmp/default.htm for review prior to the meetings. A final public hearing will be held in May during a regularly scheduled Board of Supervisors meeting.
